Audition Song Books

The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology Audition Books

Many years ago when I was a young actor, we didn't have pre-cut audition songs. (I literally sound like the person who tells the story of how they went up the hill to school in the snow both ways right now.) . Anyway, what we had to do was cut the songs for ourselves. There's nothing wrong with still doing that if you know what you're looking for and how to do it. Some songs are easier to determine where to make a cut versus others. There are some songs that honestly are not written in a way to be cut or would even make good, quality audition songs with the requirements most auditions ask for.

I'll be honest about these books. Some of the cuts I've seen are in my opinion not that great. You may want to consider getting a copy of the entire song if there's one you're very interested in using and cut it yourself. Overall I find these particular books are pretty good compared to others I've used.

One thing I like that these books offer is they put them in various categories. For example: dramatic songs, ballads, comic songs, character songs, songs based on range, etc. I really like this option because if you're looking for something quickly or need a reminder of what's out there and where it would land, this is helpful. I hear so many actors wanting to know what song to use for X musical. These categories could help make it easier seeing what's being listed in the same group, and could potentially be a good pick.

Another great thing I found that I appreciate about these particular books is the variety of songs, age and vocal ranges, and musical theatre era represented. Bonus, if you are an owner of any of the Musical Theatre Anthology Books, the Audition Books list which anthology you can find the complete song in.

If you're still wanting some help picking out the best song for your and your audition or you're wanting a song cut, that's something I can do for you. You can schedule a consultation with me here.

Book Details to Know

If you own (or want to purchase any of the anthologies made prior), here's how you know where the full song is. In the table of contents they list the songs as such - Page number, Song Title, Show Name, The Musical Theatre Anthology Volume number. (Note - these current Audition books cover Anthology's 1-7.)

Much like the Musical Theatre Anthology books, these are broken down into voice types - soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone/bass.

I highly recommend this for any actor who is auditioning for musical theatre. It covers teens through the older adult age range.

Clicking on the links I have provided gives me a small commission to support the work I put into my blog. I write them myself and without any outside support. For these particular books, it also gets you to the right ones. The color and the font looks the same on many of their books. If you don't read it carefully you may get the wrong one. So always double check before you make your purchase. Thank you for your support!
