Industry Reflections

Things I've learned being in the acting industry for the past 20+ years.

Here are a few things I’ve learned being in this industry over the years. I share these with you to help you with your acting journey.

1.) Continuous ongoing training can help you learn, grow, and improve. What it won't do is make things perfect. It may make some things easier. It may make some things better. It may help you make better choices. It won't stop anything 'bad' from happening.

2.) Writing in a journal can help you release and track things. Track what you've done and how it may have worked or not worked. Reflect on what you'd like to do differently.

I find writing also allows me to slow down and gather my thoughts. Technology is quick and easier, but handwriting makes me think more intently.

3.) Take what you need but know how fast this industry moves. This industry is always changing. Some things are fads and others are moving with technology. It can be tough sometimes to know which is which. However, I recommend reminding yourself of your values and how they may work with what's happening in the current industry climate.

4.) You’re not always going to get it right. Be ok with making mistakes. Be ok with not being perfect. Embracing imperfection and making mistakes is how we learn and grow to be better.

5.) Continue to review your values and goals. They can change. Mine certainly have time and experience. It's ok to adjust yours as you evolve as a person.

6.) Not everyone will like you, and that’s ok! It can be very easy to want to please everyone in this industry because we rely on gig work and good references. You don't need to compromise on your values to please others.

7.) You’re not made for every role. Actors tend to think we should be able to play any role and that's not true. There are multiple stories out there that reflect people we are unable to play.

Find your type and put your energy into telling those stories.

And finally...

8.) Reflect on what you've done so far and look ahead to plan for the future. This personally is a bittersweet thing for me every year. I know every year is out of my control. I have had to learn to make time for the to do the things to reach my goals. Otherwise they'll get pushed to the side.

If you are intentional about doing 2-3 things each month on your checklist then you will see things change.

Are you needing some 'self-help' to get you started? Look no further than here.

If you are a book reader like myself then I recommend you check out my book list - "Inspiration for Creatives" by clicking here. I have a list of books I've read that I've found helpful as a creative.

If you're not sure which one to start with, send me an email. I'll send you some questions to help you determine which one may be best for you.
